What is drywall repair?
The process of fixing or restoring damaged drywall, aka gypsum board. It's most commonly used in construction of interior walls and ceilings. There are many ways drywall repair is necessary such as impacts, water damage, home settling, or standard wear and tear. It's important because it is essential in maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of a building's interior.
How do I repair drywall?
There are a lot of ways to do it.
Assessment: identify the damage. holes, cracks, dents, water damage, or popped screws.
Safety: if there's mold, you need more things in place to proceed.
Clean/prep: Clear the damaged area of drywall and loose pieces, then clean the area of dust, debris and contaminants.
Repair: Small cracks or holes can take spackle using a putty knife. Then you can use a sponge or sander to smooth it out.
Larger repair: Use a mesh or cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole. If you need to use a piece of wood to connect it to the other framework of the home, do that. Then make sure you have it lined up for the new piece of drywall being placed. Then add joint compound, feather the edges to blend, let it dry, sand it.
Screws/nails: Either place them back and patch over it, or patch them and find new places to place them, and patch the new holes.
Water damage: Find where the water affected the drywall. Cut out that section, allow it to dry, then patch and finish.
Paint: Once everything has finished, paint it to match the surrounding walls.
Can be DIY, can also require a pro. Depends on the type of job it is.
