What are shingles?
There are different types of shingles, from cedar to vinyl, to hardie plank. It's a style of exterior cladding used to disguise as a faux natural wood, like older style cedar shake shingles. They can come in a bunch of different styles to fit basically any architectural aesthetic desired.
How do I paint shingles?
Pressure wash first, make sure it's cleared. If the shingles are textured, maybe slow down a little bit to ensure they're fully cleaned.
Spot priming on areas that don't have anything for paint to adhere to.
It's recommended to use a latex paint, preferably acrylic latex. If you don't, you can experience:
loss of adhesion, chalking, or cracking
Apply your paint with an airless sprayer, but brush and roll is fine too.
If you spray it correctly, like directly on/parellel with the shingles, you should get between all the creases.
Using a brush will also ensure you painted the entirety of the shingle.
Let it dry for a couple of days.
An example of cedar shake shingles. This shed was constructed in the 1920's.
Another style of cedar shake shingles. This house is roughly five blocks away from the other photo to the left.
The magenta portion on the peak is hardie plank shingles.
The entire upper half of the house also contain hardie plank shingles.
