What is whitewashing?
Whitewashing is a painting technique that involves applying a thin, translucent mixture of lime and/or water or a white pigment to surfaces like walls, wood, or masonry. The goal is to achieve a light, weathered appearance while retaining the texture and grain of the underlying material. This technique is often used for aesthetic purposes, providing a rustic or vintage look. Additionally, it has historical roots in agricultural settings, where it served to protect barns and fences from insects and fungi. Today, whitewashing has evolved into a versatile method used for various decorative and design applications. In the Treasure Valley, we commonly see it done on masonry accenting the front of a home.
How would I whitewash masonry? The easy way.
Clean your brick.
Let the brick dry.
Prep the area.
- Lay drop cloths, tape off anything you don't want whitewashed.
Mix a 50/50 solution of water and the latex paint you want. Stir until evenly mixed.
Test it to see if it's the right coverage.
- If it's too thin, add more paint. If it's too thick, add more water.
Apply by sponge or rag.
- Brick is porous, so expect to do several coats if you're trying to hide the brick's undertones.
It's completed when you've got the look you were going for!
If you want more depth, add a different color, like grey, red, or black, and continue the process!
